A Delta plane left a Pittsburgh runway in snow conditions on Wednesday as it attempted to take off, the airport and airline said.

There were no injuries after Delta Flight 2231 with 77 people on board left the paved surface around 6:30 p.m. Pittsburgh International Airport said in a press release.

The passengers had to be helped off the plane.

The plane, which Delta said was a Boeing 717 with 72 passengers and five crew members, was due to leave Pittsburgh for Atlanta.

“We apologize to our customers for the delay and the inconvenience,” Delta said in a statement.

There was snow in the area, but it was not known if this was the cause or if it had contributed to the incident.

A photo posted to Twitter by a passenger showed the jet in snow and first responders using escalators in the back of the plane.

The photo was accompanied by acknowledgments: “I am grateful to be back on solid ground and for the firefighters and first responders who rescued us this evening.”

NBC subsidiary WPXI of Pittsburgh reported that due to the downward angle of the nose first of the aircraft, the slides could not be used.

The winter weather advisories or warnings stretched over a long swath from Lubbock and Abilene, Texas, through southwest and central Pennsylvania to Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey, early Thursday, according to National Weather Service.

Earlier this week, moderate to heavy snowfall fell in the Pittsburgh area. Between 4 and 6 inches were seen in the city and around Allegheny County on Tuesday afternoon, according to observations released by the weather service.
