SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say that someone stole a tripod from a team at the California Transportation Department and then dropped it from a high overpass on a Sacramento Expressway , impaling the lung of a passenger in a van.

The van driver, Tim Page, told KCRA-TV that he was in Interstate 5 on Thursday morning when the yellow and red tripod broke through the glass. He says that it went through the lung of his passenger and went out.

The man survived, but with broken ribs and a partially perforated lung.

Authorities say that a 32-year-old man suspected of throwing the tripod was arrested under a warrant but that he could be charged with attempted murder.

Page was a volunteer for El Dorado Veteran Resources and had recovered his passenger, another veteran, from the airport.
