A plane passenger was arrested Wednesday night after opening the emergency exit door and stepping out onto the wing of the plane, the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement. The plane, which had just arrived at Miami International Airport from Cali, Colombia, was “positioning” at the departure gate when the incident occurred.
He was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, police said. The incident is still under investigation.
The man was taken to a local jail and then transferred to a hospital because he was not feeling well, according to CBS Miami. The charges are pending.
“We thank the members of our team and the police for their professionalism and speed of action,” American Airlines, which operated the aircraft, said in a statement on Wednesday. He added that the Boeing 737 MAX had 171 passengers and six crew members on board.
The plane was able to safely arrive at the departure gate and disembark, CBS Miami reported.
