There is a question at the root of every rumor of exchange between Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen and the Giants.
If the Giants did not want Rosen to be a fundamentally healthy prospect with footwork, mechanics and NFL caliber balance in the NFL draft in 2018, why would they change their minds after a disappointing rookie season?
Giants coach Pat Shurmur can not talk about Rosen because it would be a violation of the NFL rules, but he can speak in general terms about the development phase between the first and second season of a player. So, that's what was asked of him.
"I think all the rookies at one point at the end of the season all have Aha! moment, said Shurmur. "When they're getting ready for this season," Wow, I did not know no matter what last year. & # 39;
"We all had this case where we do something the second time. Recruits can really dig (for the second year) without having to worry about this or that. They focus more clearly on their work and can accelerate the pace of improvements. "
Is it different for a quarterback given the huge learning curve associated with the position?
"Probably," says Shurmur, "because the focus is always on the QB a bit."
Rosen, who was drafted No. 10 in the overall rankings and fourth among the five-fourth first round, was 3-10 as a starter. He completed 55.2% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 14 steals.
The Manning brothers are two of the most striking examples of a turnaround from first to second grade.
Peyton went 3-13 and led the NFL in interceptions as a rookie in 1998. A year later, he went 13-3 and won his first of 14 Pro Bowl selections.
NFL Draft 2019: Missouri's Drew Lock Better than Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State? Under the radar like Patrick Mahomes?
Does Kyler Murray of Oklahoma, Dwayne Haskins of the State of Ohio, deserve to be chosen before Missouri's Drew Lock?
Eli scored 1-6 with two games in which he was rated under 16.9 as a rookie who took over Kurt Warner mid-season in 2004. He led the Giants to a playoff spot at the start of the season.
In Shurmur's resume, Donovan McNabb replaced Doug Pederson for the Eagles 2 to 4 in 1999. He rebounded with a Pro Bowl selection and a playoff spot in his second season.
Sam Bradford, NFL rookie of the year in 2010, saw his record and stats crumble dramatically in his second season with the Rams.
"The way your team is organized, you are trying to make the most of that," Shurmur said. "You try to bring all your players, bring them to the field and play football. When that happens, it happens.
Any team that negotiates for Rosen will owe him about $ 6.2 million in salary and bonuses over the next three seasons.
The Cardinals have not committed to negotiating it and will probably not do it until they know for sure that they will make Kyler Murray of Oklahoma the first pick in the repechage. Even then, they could keep Rosen in reserve unless their asking price is met.
