Patrick Dempsey teases Meredith’s diagnosis, length of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ comeback on ‘Ellen’ – Deadline

A few days after the surprise appearance of his character in the season 17 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about his return to ABC’s medical drama.

Derek, who tragically died five and a half years ago, returned to a beach dream that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) slipped into after collapsing in the parking lot of the Gray Sloan Memorial.

Speaking with Deadline from the premiere last week, Grey’s Anatomy Showrunner Krista Vernoff wouldn’t say if Meredith was okay and the collapse was the result of her overwork or was it something serious, like COVID, since she worked almost exclusively with COVID patients.

This week’s episode promo (you can watch it below) features Meredith in a hospital bed, maintained by colleagues in full PPE as she struggles to breathe.

Responding to DeGeneres’ question about the genesis of his secret cameo, Dempsey confirmed Meredith’s COVID diagnosis.

He explained how he and Pompeo got together in July and reflected on what they could do to get people to wear masks, wondering “how great it would be for fans to see everyone come together from this. bizarre way ”when Pompeo suggested he returned to the show.

“And to the writers’ credit, Krista had this great idea where I’m coming to visit her in her COVID dream,” Dempsey said.

He also provided more information on his character’s lifespan, and that’s great news for Meredith-Derek fans. In last week’s interview with Deadline, Dempsey said he enjoyed the reunion at the premiere and left for more episodes, while Vernoff said of Dempsey’s presence in the show this season, “it’s more than the one scene you’ve seen” in the premiere. Derek’s presence will be quite extensive, Dempsey revealed on Ellen.

Asked by DeGeneres how many more episodes he will have this season, Dempsey said, “I don’t know how many. I know I am throughout this season he is coming back to visit.

And that’s OK by Dempsey who enjoys playing a vision that brings joy and peace to Meredith.

“There are so many souls we have lost right now, so the thought of having angels around us is very heartwarming, at least for me,” he said.

This is Dempsey’s Ellen interview, followed by this week’s promo Grey’s Anatomy episode.
