Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeted Tyreek Hill 15 times and Travis Kelce seven times in his 36 passing attempts on Sunday. That didn’t leave much for six other players, with no other player seeing more than three targets.
Some have expressed concern (seriously!) About the cast, even though Hill and Kelce are the best weapons on the team. Mahomes, for his part, isn’t worried about Sammy Watkins leaving affecting the proportion of passes going to Kelce and Hill.
“For me, it’s just about going through the readings of the game and seeing what the defense gives you,” Mahomes said Wednesday, via John Dixon of arrowheadpride.com. “Last week they kind of left the midfield a bit open, so I got to hit Tyreek and Trav a lot in the middle.”
Kelce and Hill combined 280 targets last season, which was 44.4% of the team’s targets. Mecole Hardman was third at 62. Hardman caught his three targets Sunday for 19 yards.
“As we get into games like this week, where they play more male coverage – I’m sure they’ll have a plan for Tyreek and Trav – that will give the other guys more opportunities,” said Mahomes. “We have play calls for everyone. They know that in every game they have a chance to get the ball.
Mahomes said he trusts all of his receivers, even though Hill and Kelce are his favorite targets, and whoever is open gets the ball.
“I have full confidence in everyone who is on this football field,” said Mahomes. “I mean, we have guys who can play everywhere. Last week Trav and Tyreek performed. But I’m sure throughout the season – and what we’ve seen in our past – is that we have guys like Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle who can shake things up anytime. I have full confidence in this.
