Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains in concussion protocol Tuesday afternoon, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Mahomes left the Chiefs’ divisional round game against the Cleveland Browns in the third quarter after a concussion assessment.
Garafolo was very clear in his message that this is an ongoing process.
GARAFOLO: “Concussions are not ankle sprains. You can’t sit here and say, ‘It’ll take a number of weeks or days. You have a timeline for this. So you can’t really predict concussions. So when you hear things like, “Hey, he’s confident he’s going to play” and “He seems to be doing well,” and all of those things. “He has no symptoms at the moment. Yes. This is a good thing. But you have to continue to follow the protocol, and while we’re here right now, I could tell you that it’s still in the concussion protocol right now, and there are steps to go through. They need to increase his physical activity and then see if any symptoms result. It’s part of the process to be able to go through with it. So here is. I hear all the optimism. I hear all the people saying he’s going to be ready to go on Sunday. We don’t know for sure, but will find out over the next few days, provided he continues to be symptom-free as they progress through this protocol.
As Garafolo mentions, there is a five-step process a player in the protocol must finish before returning to the roster.
“Due to protocol, it’s a given from a coach’s point of view,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said on Monday. “I mean, you don’t have to think about it, you just have to go ahead and make sure you have an answer if he’s there, have an answer if he’s not there. I cannot tell you from a medical point of view where it is. I mean, I don’t know that. So it is their decision and I simply follow it.
The chefs take the Buffalo bills for the AFC Championship Sunday at 5:40 p.m. Arrowhead time. If Mahomes can’t play, replacement Chad Henne would be the expected starting quarterback for the Chiefs. Henne completed 6 of 8 assists and had a key 13-yard scramble in the Chiefs’ 22-17 divisional round win.
