Patrick Mahomes may have cleared the concussion protocol and got the nod to play in the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills, but the Kansas City Chiefs star is reportedly still in pain.

Mahomes is still struggling with a toe injury he sustained in the Chiefs’ victory over the Cleveland Browns in the divisional round and before coming out with a head injury, NFL Network reported on Sunday.

Mahomes was seen hobbling during the match but didn’t miss any play due to the toe in particular. The toe injury was listed in the Chiefs injury report this week. NFL Network reported that Mahomes will see a specialist after the season to determine if he will need surgery.

The Super Bowl LIV MVP was listed as a limited practice participant, but reportedly took all or most reps at the quarterback and it was the toe that affected him the most.

Mahomes is the one who told reporters on Friday he was cleared to play. He said he and the team officials didn’t think the injury had had the last effects.

“You want to be there, but you have to follow protocol, and you have to do it the right way. I mean you have to look at it long term as much as you look at the short term and all the doctors and talking to all the doctors and going through the tests we have to believe that there will be no effects persistent and that I can go out there and be myself and who I am every week, ”he said.
