Veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson has informed the New Orleans Saints that he plans to retire, agent Ron Butler told ESPN’s Mike Triplett.

Robinson’s decision comes on top of a pressing need for a cornerback for the Saints that coach Sean Payton said his team “must” address early in training camp.

The Saints have released cornerback Janoris Jenkins as part of their salary cap purge early in the offseason. Jenkins later signed with the Tennessee Titans.

Robinson, 33, has played eight of his 11 seasons with the Saints, including the last three. Last season, he had two interceptions in 12 games and made four starts.

He was a first-round selection (32nd overall) by the Saints in 2010 and has 16 interceptions, 83 assists defended, 2 forced fumbles, 2 sacks and 338 tackles in 123 games over his career.
