Patrik Laine is already feeling the anger of John Tortorella

It didn’t take long for Patrik Laine to familiarize himself with the styles of John Tortorella.

In his fourth game with the Columbus Blue Jackets after their massive trade with the Winnipeg Jets, Laine was benched Monday night in the Blue Jackets’ 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Laine, 22, spent most of the second half of the game, not playing until 11:14. The No.2 pick in the 2016 draft scored three goals in his first three games for Columbus, including two on Sunday, but clearly isn’t playing up to Tortorella’s standards.

“It will stay in the house. I know you’re going to try and work me out on this, ”Tortorella told reporters of Laine’s bench. “There are a number of different things that come into play with that, that will stay in the locker room.”

Tortorella has historically had a short leash with players if he feels they aren’t playing up to par, regardless of their record. His clash with Pierre-Luc Dubois preceded him being treated for Laine and Jack Roslovic.

“The last thing I want to do is bench a player,” said Tortorella, who coached the Rangers from 2009 to 2013. “We’re just disjointed in every way – quite honestly, both on the ice than outside. It’s an easy thing to put a player on the bench. It’s the last thing I want to do, but if I think I have to do it, then I have to do it.

Cam Atkinson, in his 10th season with the Blue Jackets, has been the target of some of Tortorella’s great loves. He sits next to Laine in the locker room and says the two have spoken about Laine’s performance.

“We’re a pretty open bunch,” Atkinson said. “He knows. He’ll be the first to admit it: he just needs to be better, clear, and simple.

Laine has accumulated 143 goals and 110 assists in 310 career NHL games.
