The Patriots missed the chance to make a close end last weekend, and now they are shunning the position.
The team traded third-year professional Jacob Hollister against the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick for 2020.
The decision leaves the Patriots with Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and unprepared rookie Andrew Beck at the tight end.
Hollister originally had the Patriots' 53-man squad trained as an unregistered free agent in 2017. His athleticism shone all summer, and he appeared to be a player with considerable potential.
"He has a lot of football in front of him," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick at the start of the 2018 training camp. "He did not have much experience – he did have some -unes – but he won and will win a lot more. I think he has a bright future. He works hard, he is a tough child, he plays hard, practical and has become much better with his fundamental principles and his techniques at his post. "
Hollister was hamstring injured throughout his second season. He appeared eight times, amassing four passes for 42 yards before being placed in the injured reserve in January.
The Pats have activated a similar player, Stephen Anderson, in his place for the playoffs. Anderson should have a chance to make the list as a close end.
With Rob Gronkowski retired, the tight final position is full of uncertainty. Seferian-Jenkins and LaCosse – two free agent signatures – are currently in the running for their position. Seferian-Jenkins is the top talent, but he has to stay healthy. Seferian-Jenkins has won just 10 games once in five seasons in the NFL.
In the repechage last weekend, the Iowa duo of T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant came off the board with numbers 8 and 20, respectively. Both would have been intriguing with the Patriots, but the club was not able to draft.
In the end, the Pats refused to tackle the tight final position.
"We are working in all areas and we are trying to rank the players accordingly," said Nick Caserio, director of the Patriots' staff. "I mean, were there opportunities for us there? I mean, maybe. So, it's always relative to what are your other options, what are you looking for? "
