The Patriots turn Jimmy Garoppolo's business into a veritable mine of talent.
New England traded Garoppolo in San Francisco during the 2017 season for the 49ers' second-round pick in 2018. That choice proved to be the 43rd overall pick in the NFL draft in 2018. But the Patriots did not use it. Instead, they traded it for two choices – and then traded those two choices for more choices, and continued to make further exchanges to the point where they drafted six players with full or partly from the second round of the 49ers. And they are still not finished.
As PatsPulpit.com notes, Patriotes' movements after the Garoppolo trade were extraordinary:
Last year, they traded 49ers against the Lions for the 51st and 117th overall.
They traded the 51st choice for the Bears for the 105th pick and the Bears second round pick in 2019.
They traded the 105th pick in Cleveland for the 114th and 178th picks.
They traded the 114th overall pick in Detroit for the Lions' third round pick in 2019.
With the 178th overall choice, they formed Christian Sam.
With the 117th overall, they traded their second-round pick against Duke Johnson.
With this second round of 2019 that they got Bears, the Patriots combine it with another choice to go up this year and repel Joejuan Williams.
With the Lions 'choice of the third round in 2019, the Patriots made another trade with the Bears, this time earning the 87th and 162nd overall positions, as well as the Bears' fourth round pick in 2020.
They used the 87th pick on Damien Harris and wrapped up the 162nd pick with a third-round pick to get two more choices they used on Yodny Cajuste and Jarrett Stidham.
Thus, the Patriots eliminated Christian Sam and Damien Harris from the Garoppolo trade, as well as partially responsible choices of the exchanges that brought Duke Johnson, Joejuan Williams, Yodny Cajuste and Jarrett Stidham, and they still have the choice of fourth round of the Bears in 2020. It's a huge comeback for the Patriots.
