Tom Brady has a new backup quarterback.

Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports that the Patriots will release Brian Hoyer Saturday. Jarrett Stidham, fourth-round pick, is the only quarterback on the lineup behind Brady.

The move does not come as a big surprise. It was still unlikely that the Patriots cut Stidham this summer and his play during the exhibitor season made it all the more unlikely that they would expose the rookie to the waiver.

Hoyer served twice with the Patriots as Brady's replacement and started playing for the Browns, Texans, 49ers, Bears and Cardinals throughout his career. This type of experience will probably be of interest to teams that have not sold their current backup options. Given the fact that they have kicked the tires of players like Brandon Weeden, Brock Osweiler and Matt Cassel, the Colts come to mind as a potential contender.
