Brian Hoyer’s stint on the New England Patriots training team ended on Saturday.
The Patriots officially signed the veteran quarterback of the 53-man squad for a one-year contract, as reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hoyer was released as the NFL deadline passed in August and served as the standard elevation for New England’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins. He will continue to be the only active replacement for rookie starter Mac Jones against the New York Jets.
The 35-year-old is on his third tour with the organization he joined as an undrafted free agent from Michigan State in 2009. Now 70 games and 39 starts in his NFL career, Hoyer threw for 10,404 yards with 52 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
The Patriots came in on Saturday with an opening on the roster. That stays with the move from rookie kicker Quinn Nordin to the finalized injured reserve.
Nordin had been ruled out due to an abdominal injury and was inactive for the first week. In his absence, 36-year-old kicker Nick Folk scored three of three goals as the training team’s uplift mate.
New England capitalized on the practice team’s second rise on Sunday against New York. Also high was outside linebacker Tashawn Bower, who appeared in seven games and made three starts last season.
Kick-off at MetLife Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
