Patriots sign Matt Judon

UPDATE, 2:00 p.m .: It’s official now, Judon is going to be a patriot. The agreement is finalized, Rapoport tweets. It’s a four-year, $ 56 million pact with $ 32 million guaranteed in the first two years, a source told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (Twitter link).

13:36: The Patriots’ free agent spending spree may just be beginning. New England has already agreed to big deal terms with a tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive tackle Including Godchaux Monday, and they have a new big player in their sights.

Patriots make ‘major effort’ to sign Ravens pass-rusher Matt Judon, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweets. The Pats feel “close” to signing Judon, a source told Josina Anderson on ESPN.com (Twitter link). Everything we’ve heard lately this offseason indicated that Baltimore would likely let Judon walk. The Ravens franchise marked him in the last cycle, but it would have been hugely expensive to do it a second time around and they never made a long-term deal.

Grand Valley State’s 2016 fifth-round pick, Judon broke in 2017 and just kept getting better. He’s been a Pro Bowler in each of the past two seasons, scoring six sacks in 14 games in 2020 and 9.5 sacks the year before.

With Godchaux and now potentially Judon in the fold, the Patriots’ defensive front will be much bigger in 2021. The Pats had just 24 sacks as a team in 2020, the sixth in the championship.
