While their Week 4 game against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looks like a tall order, the New England Patriots are actually having a good time early in the season this year. Part of it is a contest against the New Orleans Saints on the third weekend of the regular season – a game that just got a little easier.
As announced last week, after all, Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata will miss the first six games of the year due to suspension. The 28-year-old has apparently tested positive for a banned substance and will therefore have to watch a considerable portion of his sixth season in the NFL on the go.
“While I was certainly surprised and disappointed with this news, I am responsible for what I put into my body,” Onyemata wrote, via athletics. “As I never knowingly took anything that might cause a positive test, we are currently testing the supplements I was taking at the time of the test. Either way, I pledge to be more aware of any medication and dietary supplement that may contain substances prohibited by the NFL. ”
The New Orleans game in New England is one of those Onyemata will miss.
His absence will undoubtedly be a blow to the defense of the Saints. Onyemata, after all, was arguably the club’s best defensive lineman last season. Mainly lining up along the inside, he impressed both as a passer – registering 6.5 sacks – and as a runner-up; Onyemata has also had an interception in his 15 appearances on the game.
While the Patriots are expected to field one of the best offensive lines in the game in 2021, Onyemata would have been a tough clash as a result. From now on, the new-look group from New England will no longer have to worry about him.
Onyemata obviously won’t be the only key 2020 Saints member to miss the game against the Patriots: future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement earlier this year. As a result, New England will face either Jameis Winston or the planned save options Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian and Ian Book.
The two teams, who last met in 2017, will meet on September 26 at Gillette Stadium.
