Paul George has had no trouble discussing the Clippers’ issues during the 2020 season.
George was a guest on the “All The Smoke Podcast,” and it looks like the episode is named after him. George didn’t mince a word in the preview trailer, when he opened up about his struggles playing the Doc Rivers system.
George’s statement is very interesting. On the one hand, this statement should have been clearly kept internally. On the other side, you could argue that several Clipper players weren’t used properly under Doc Rivers last season, including Ivica Zubac, Landry Shamet, JaMychal Green, Montrezl Harrell and Paul George.
Throughout the season, George completed a career-high 33% of his total plays using the pick-and-roll. At the same time, the use rate declined in the playoffs, and George was repeatedly standing at the three-point line. It’s very easy to overshadow George over these comments, but in all fairness there are probably a lot of players on the Clippers who want to say the same thing publicly.
The biggest problem is that all of these statements should have been kept private, because they don’t favor anyone by showing them on a podcast. Unfortunately for George, he is the star and it is he who will receive the most criticism. Most sadly for George, he hit the side of the backboard in a Game 7 – and that’s all most fans will remember.
There is new hope for the Clippers and Paul George as they are expected to run an entirely different system with Ty Lue. In Lue’s first statements during training camp, he said words every Clippers fan wanted to hear.
“We have a new attitude and a new system.”
