Paul Simon could give some lessons of legacy about how to perform on television without having the air of desperately craving for attention. Simon ended his touring career last year, when he played the final date of his farewell tour. But Simon has not finished playing live. He will be starring San Francisco's Outside Lands Festival later this summer, and after the end of his tour, he has already given concerts SNL and Colbert. Last night, Simon was on Colbert againand this time, Colbert himself was part of his support group.
The classic album of Simon in 1986 Graceland was famous for the way Simon played with African rhythms and harmonies, but that's not all that Simon did on this album. He also experimented with Zydeco, the old hybrid sound from New Orleans, on the title of the album "That Was Your Mother". This is Colbert's band leader, Jon Batiste, a New Orleans jazz prodigy. And so, when Simon returned to Colbert's Last show last night he played "That Was Your Mother" with Batiste on the accordion and Batiste's Stay Human band supporting him. And Colbert participated in the fun part – playing a rub, a washboard that you wear like a jacket, and avoiding embarrassment.
The whole performance is very funny. Simon is incredibly laid back and takes some really unexpected dance steps. And Colbert, Batiste and all the others were clearly delighted to share a scene with this man. The performance is well worth your time, and you can watch it below.
Simon did not have new music to promote, but in the interest of God, listen Graceland.
