LOS ANGELES – Paul Simon has sold his entire song catalog to Sony Music Publishing, joining a series of older musicians enjoying their lifelong work.
Sony Music Publishing said on Wednesday that the deal includes classic songs ranging from “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to “Still Crazy After All These Years” which Simon has written and recorded over his six-decade career.
The value of the transaction has not been disclosed.
Simon, 79, a 16-time Grammy winner who announced in 2018 he was retiring from the tour, said in a statement he was “happy that Sony Music Publishing has been the keeper of my songs for decades. to come up”.
The sale is the latest in a series of catalog offerings that include music from Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young and Carole Bayer Sager over the past year.
Dylan sold his back catalog of over 600 songs in December to Universal Music Group and the purchase price was widely reported at $ 300 million. Other songs were picked up by London-based Hipgnosis, who attributed the deals to an increase in music streaming especially during the coronavirus pandemic when concerts and music festivals were canceled.
Companies can collect royalties by licensing the songs they have acquired for use in movies, commercials, and branding deals.
Simon launched his career in the late 1950s as a folk singer with his childhood friend Art Garfunkel. The duo produced a string of 1960s hits including “Mrs Robinson”, “The Sound of Silence” and “The Boxer” before going their separate ways. Simon embarked on a solo career that produced successful albums and songs including “50 Ways to Lose Your Lover” and “Graceland”.
