PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One minute, their paychecks have been deposited in their bank accounts. The next minute, they were gone.
The sudden closure of a New York-based payroll company affects businesses and employees across the country.
At Liken Home Care in Forest Hills, the president of the company immediately took steps to get his workers paid, even though his company was not at fault.
KDKA's Kym Gable told Bob Liken, "There was no such announcement. We never had a problem with that before, so we had to get by. These people need their salary. Many of them live pretty much from one to the other, so we had to start rewriting the checks to get money for these people. "
Cindy Foreback, director of technology at Liken, was one of those employees.
"It's scary.Know that someone goes on your bank account illegally and withdraws money without it being an authorized transaction, your bank will tell you that you can not do anything about it, it's scary, "said Foreback.
MyPayrollHR had 4,000 corporate clients in the United States. Tens of thousands of pay checks have probably been affected.
Liken and other companies that used MyPayrollHR received this automated message last week:
"We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are no longer able to process other transactions."
Meanwhile, hundreds of people are publishing heartbreaking stories on the Victims of MyPayrollHR Facebook page.
"We want our employees to know that we are fighting for them. We are doing everything we can to fix it, "said Foreback.
The KDKA has learned that the FBI, the Attorney General's Office and the New York Governor have been informed.
At the same time, companies whose workers have been affected also urge them to file a complaint with their banking institutions.
