Payless is closing its shoe stores, according to several media, including one from CNN that the retailer would close its 2,100 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Liquidation sales will begin Sunday and stores will begin shutting down in March, though most will remain open until May, according to CNN's report.

Payless operates a store in Capital Mall, West of Olympia, according to the company's website, as well as a Shopko store in Lacey. The Shopko store has already announced its closure.

There is also a store on Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast, next to Fred Meyer. This place is closed because a car returned on January 31, according to Lacey Fire District 3.

The incident was reported around 1:15 pm. An employee of the store was not injured and the driver was treated and released at the scene.

The driver had the Pontiac sedan in reverse and would have pushed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake, said a Lacey fire chief.

A sign attached to the window of this site indicates that the business is closed until February 25 at least.
