The reboot drama series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in Peacock chose newcomer Jabari Banks as the lead role, Variety has learned.

Banks will play the role of Will, who was played by Will Smith on the original ’90s sitcom. Banks was told by Smith himself that he landed the role in a video seen above .

Banks currently lives in West Philadelphia, also the birthplace of his character. He graduated from the Philadelphia University of the Arts in 2020. In addition to being an actor, he is a songwriter, singer, rapper, and basketball player. It is replaced by Frontline Management and The Kohner Agency.

“Bel-Air” is based on the viral video by Morgan Cooper, which reimagined the beloved sitcom directed by Will Smith as a drama series. Peacock gave the show a two-season commission in September 2020.

Set in America today, “Bel-Air” is described as a dramatic hour-long serial analogue of the sitcom’s version that delves into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the closed Bel-Air mansions.

Cooper is expected to be a co-writer, director, and executive producer. TJ Brady and Rasheed Newson will be co-showrunners and executive producers, following the departure of Chris Collins. Smith is also producing through Westbrook Studios with Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, and original series creators Andy and Susan Borowitz. Miguel Melendez and Terence Carter of Westbrook Studios will also be executive producers. Westbrook Studios and Universal Television will produce. UTV was also the studio behind the original show.
