Terminally ill pediatrician Bharat Narumanchi committed suicide, along with another pediatrician, Lindley Dodson, in a hostage situation at a children’s medical center in Texas on Tuesday.
The case is considered a murder-suicide, investigators say. Narumanchi was diagnosed with terminal cancer and had only weeks to live, the police said.
Narumanchi applied to volunteer at the medical center a week before the attack, which was the first and only time Dodson and Narumanchi had contact, authorities said.
“Dr Dodson never had direct contact with this man until yesterday. “Victoria Ishaak, an employee of the center at the time of the incident, said to the American statesman from Austin.
There were five hostages at the start of the incident. Some escaped and other Narumanchi were allowed to leave. Dodson was the only one who had to stay.
“They were released because they were not doctors,” Ishaak said. “This guy didn’t want anything to do with someone who wasn’t a doctor.”
There was a long standoff with the Austin Police SWAT officers who attempted to establish contact with Narumanchi during the situation. The officers finally entered and found Dodson dead from a gunshot wound, along with Narumanchi.
“We are more than devastated by the tragic, sudden and senseless loss of our beloved Lindley. As a dedicated mother, wife, daughter, friend and pediatrician, she radiated light, love and joy in everything she did and with everyone she touched, ”Dodson’s family said in a communicated: KVUE reported.
