Pedro Almodóvar’s new film “Parallel Mothers”, starring Penelope Cruz, will open the next Venice Film Festival in September.
The eagerly awaited photo of Almodóvar, which was filmed during the pandemic, will premiere at Venice Lido in competition on September 1.
The film sees the Spanish author reunite with Cruz, a frequent collaborator, more recently in Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” in 2019 opposite Antonio Banderas. “Mothers” also stars former San Sebastián Festival Best Actress winner Aitana Sánchez Gijón (“Volaverunt”) and newcomer Milena Smit (“No matarás”).
Almodóvar’s last work focuses on three mothers – performed by Cruz, Gijón and Smit – and expands her previous portrayals of femininity, focusing on imperfect mothers, moving away from her earlier work exploring mothers and motherhood which includes “All About my mother “and Pain and Glory.
Sony Pictures Classics owns the North American, Australian and New Zealand rights to the film which is produced by Agustín Almodóvar and Esther García through Almodóvar El Deseo’s production company. “Parallel Mothers” to be released in Italy by Warner Bros ..
“I was born a director in 1983 in Venice…in the Midday Midnight section, ” Almodóvar said in a statement. “Thirty-eight years later, I am called to open the festival. I cannot explain the joy and the honor, and how much that means to me without falling into complacency. I am very grateful to the festival for this recognition and I hope to live up to it, ”he added.
Said Barbera: “I am grateful to Pedro Almodóvar for granting us the privilege of opening the Film Festival with his new film, an intense and sensitive portrait of two women grappling with a pregnancy with unforeseeable consequences, female solidarity and the sexuality experienced in in complete freedom and without hypocrisy, all against a backdrop of reflection on the ineluctable need for truth that must be pursued relentlessly.
“It’s a much appreciated return to Venice competing for our 2019 Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion recipient, many years after the success of”Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown ”, the film which marked his definitive triumph on the international scene, ”he added.
As previously announced by festival organizers, “Dune,” Denis Villeneuve’s big-budget sci-fi epic starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, will be played out of competition. David Gordon Green’s “Halloween Kills,” starring Jamie Lee Curtis, will also be announced.
Other titles reportedly blocked for a Lido launch include Jane Campion’s “The power of the dog“Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, and Paolo Sorrentino’s semi-autobiographical drama” The Hand of God “, both from Netflix, and also” Spencer “, Pablo Larraín’s highly anticipated drama starring Kristen Spencer in the role of Lady Diana.
The 78th edition of Venice is scheduled to take place from September 1 to 11 as a physical event in its own right. Bong Joon-ho to chair the main jury while Jamie Lee Curtis and Italian Oscar winner Roberto Benigni (“Life is Beautiful”) will be recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
