Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was placed on the 10-day injury list Thursday because of a surgically repaired left knee irritation.

Pedroia came out of the Yankees defeat on Wednesday night after a round and a half and was tested in New York rather than traveling with the team to Tampa Bay.

Pedroia, 35, missed all but three games last season while he was recovering from a cartilage restoration operation after the 2017 season.

"It felt like a pop, I think it was saying yesterday," said Dave Dombrowski, president of the team's baseball operations, on WEEI radio Thursday. . "As we know, the knee will never be 100% .It's amazing that a player can play with what he's been through."

Pedroia started the season on the injured list with left knee inflammation. It was activated on April 9 for the first Homestand of the Red Sox and is 2-in-20 at the plate.

The Red Sox have named right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Pedroia's place on the list.

The Red Sox, scoring 6-13 after a two-game sweep by the Yankees, opened a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Tropicana Field on Friday.
