NEW ORLEAN – A few days after accepting a blockbuster that brought three young players and three draft picks to the New Orleans pelicans in exchange for Anthony Davis, the team's office made the decision next: ensure the direction of the group with the new appearance.

The Pelicans announced that they had chosen the contract team option of head coach Alvin Gentry for the 2020-21 season.

"We could not be more excited about expanding our relationship with Alvin," said David Griffin, Executive Vice President of Pelicans basketball operations, in a statement. "He is exactly the right coach at the right time for this franchise. As I have already mentioned many times, the common vision we have for the future of Pelicans basketball, both on the ground and on the ground, will allow us to build a list that will suit both culturally and tactically.

"Perhaps most importantly, the relationship we have built over our many years together will allow us to challenge ourselves, to empower and develop each other and our franchise."

Griffin thinks Gentry's attack is a stylistic fit for his team's lineup. In the contract with Davis, the Pelicans acquired Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and Brandon Ingram from the Los Angeles Lakers.

On several occasions during last season, the drama has swirled around the pelicans. Davis publicly requested an exchange before the February deadline, but February 7 was adopted and Davis remained on the pelicans list. A few days later, the then CEO, Dell Demps, was fired.

Many people in the organization have given Gentry a soothing presence inside the company during a turbulent period. As one reception staff member said: "Her personality is similar to Icy Hot's: it alleviates pain and tension in difficult times."

On Thursday, pelicans should use their first choice to select Zion Williamson – a prospect on which they can rebuild their franchise.
