The Pelicans fired Stan Van Gundy almost a month ago.
Why haven’t they hired a new head coach yet?
Maybe because they’re waiting for someone who’s still working in the playoffs – Suns assistant Willie Green.
WDSU’s Fletcher Mackel:
I continue to hear from NBA sources, Suns assistant coach Willie Green is the Pelicans’ alleged next head coach.
While a deal is NOT made, there is a lot of mutual interest and I’m told, “Willie wants the job in New Orleans and they want it.” pic.twitter.com/C7cNUMhDfy– Fletcher Mackel (@FletcherWDSU) July 11, 2021
Green gained respect as an assistant coach for the Warriors and now the Suns. He played 12 seasons in the NBA as a second-round pick turned role player, including a year in New Orleans.
Pelicans definitely need a new voice. Green would provide that.
But he would also face immediate expectations. The Pelicans try to win quickly and appease Zion Williamson.
It’s tricky work for anyone, especially a first-time NBA head coach.
That said, there is also a special opportunity with Williamson and a treasure trove of assets.
