Pelosi announces retired lieutenant general to lead review of ‘security infrastructure’ after Capitol attack

“To protect our democracy, we must now subject the security of the US Capitol complex to a rigorous review,” Pelosi said in a statement. “To this end, I asked Lieutenant General Russel Honoré (Retired), a respected leader with experience in crisis management, to lead an immediate review of Capitol Hill security infrastructure, interagency processes and procedures, as well as command and control.

The attack on Capitol Hill left members of Congress furious and shaken with fear for their lives during the riots. The Democratic-led House moved swiftly this week to impeach President Donald Trump for inciting an insurgency, a vote that received bipartisan support with a handful of Republicans crossing party lines in support of impeachment.

Pelosi spoke of efforts to secure the Capitol in the wake of the deadly siege at a press conference on Friday, saying: “Following last week’s attack on the Capitol complex, there has been a mobilization without Precedent of Capitol Security. I want to express my gratitude to our Capitol Police, the National Guard who are here to protect our democracy. ”

The riot on Capitol Hill came after Trump repeatedly made false claims that the election was stolen from him and urged his supporters to fight back.

In the aftermath of the deadly siege, security has been intensely tightened on Capitol Hill ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, which is expected to take place in a few days on January 20.

Lieutenant-General Russel Honoré listens to a briefing on the Hurricane Katrina disaster during a stopover in New Orleans in September 2005.

Pelosi said at his press conference: “We have to put this whole complex under scrutiny in light of what has happened and the fact that the grand opening is imminent.”

The House speaker added at her press conference: “Members are moving forward with strict scrutiny from committees, of course, to have an after action review. There is a strong interest in Congress in a 9/11 type commission – an outside commission to lead this after action review. In the meantime, I am very grateful to General Honoré for taking on this responsibility. “

Pelosi described Honoré as “a respected leader with experience in crisis management”.
