House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will announce on Thursday that she appoints Rear Admiral Margaret Grun Kibben as the new House Chaplain – the first female chaplain in either chamber of Congress.
Pelosi called the nomination “historic” and thanked the bipartisan group of House members who conducted the research.
“Kibben brings decades of decorated experience to the military and ministry, as a retired Rear Admiral who served as the U.S. Navy’s chief chaplain and Marine Corps chaplain,” Pelosi said in a communicated. “Her integrity, experience and patriotism will serve Congress and the country well as she responds to the needs of the membership.”
Kibben began active service in 1986 as part of the Navy Theology Students Program. In the past, she served as the Chief Chaplain of the Navy and Chaplain of the Marine Corps.

Pelosi also thanked the current House Chaplain, Reverend Patrick Conroy.
“Father Pat Conroy’s service has been a blessing to Members of Parliament on both sides of the aisle,” continued President Pelosi. “Throughout his service, Father Pat fulfilled the vocation of Saint Ignatius of Loyola:“ for the greater glory of God ”. His service has been a spiritual and moral anchor for the deputies, anchoring our institution in the values of faith and country and reminding our deputies of our responsibilities towards our great nation and our constituents. All MPs wish Father Pat the very best of his well-deserved retirement from home. “
