House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave a lengthy interview to “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night, and one of the highlights was when correspondent Lesley Stahl asked her about the party’s future leadership.
Stahl pointed out that Pelosi was 80 and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer was 81, and asked why there were no clear heirs in the party. Especially since “The Squad”, the group of young progressives, has such a large number of fans on social networks.
Pelosi told Stahl that the question was essentially based on a false premise. She replied that party leaders had prepared the future leadership, and maybe she didn’t know it.
“Why AOC [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.] do you complain about not having trained young people for leadership? Stahl asked.
Pelosi replied, “I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him – because we are.”
Stahl looked taken aback for a moment and said, “It was pretty brutal, sort of fired her.”

Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept in an interview published in December that Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should no longer be in the party leadership positions they hold. She said the party had little interest in preparing future generations.

Pelosi also gained media attention when she appeared to downplay Ocasio-Cortez’s victory over Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary in 2016. She said a “glass of water with a D” could win in these Democratic strongholds.
