“Assign her to the education committee when she mocked the murder of small children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, when she mocked the murder of teenagers in high school Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School – what could they be thinking? Pelosi asked Thursday. “Or think of a word too generous for what they could do? It’s absolutely appalling, and I think the focus needs to be on the Republican leadership in this House of Representatives for the contempt they have for the death of these children. “
Many House Republicans have remained silent following CNN’s reporting, but some members of the management have issued a statement criticizing the comments.
GOP House Whip Steve Scalise said in a statement to CNN: “I have always condemned the use of violent rhetoric in politics on both sides, and this is no exception. There is no exception. room for comments like that in our political discourse. “
“These comments are deeply disturbing and Leader McCarthy is planning to have a conversation with the MP about them,” Mark Bednar, spokesperson for Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy, said in a statement Wednesday evening.
After CNN contacted Greene for her initial report earlier this week, her personal Twitter account issued a statement in which she did not deny that she liked the posts and responded to the comments, but claimed that many people had managed his Facebook page.
“Over the years, teams of people have managed my pages. Many posts have been liked. Many posts have been shared. Some did not represent my views. Especially the ones CNN is about to broadcast on the internet,” she wrote.
Greene did not clarify whether she or a member of her team was behind the posts reviewed by CNN’s KFile.
CNN’s Em Steck, Andrew Kaczynski and Manu Raju contributed to this report.
