Pelosi defends impeachment over Biden call for unity: “We have to do it”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday defended the continued impeachment of Democrats despite repeated calls from President Biden to unite a divided nation.

Pelosi said the House of Representatives will send the article of impeachment against former President Trump “soon” because he is to be held responsible for the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill that left five people dead. She “doesn’t worry” about the further divisive impeachment, she said.

“The point is, the President of the United States has committed an act of incitement to insurgency,” Pelosi said Thursday at a press conference on Capitol Hill. “I don’t think it’s very unifying to say, oh, let’s just forget that and move on. This is not how you unify.

BIDEN SWORN AS 46TH PRESIDENT, SAYS ‘DEMOCRACY PLANNED’ IN INAUGURAL ADDRESS

In his inaugural address, Biden spoke of bringing the country together and allowing people on other sides of the aisle to listen to each other and give each other a chance to move forward. Impeachment is inherently divisive, and Republicans have called on Biden and Democrats to stop Trump’s trial process, especially since he’s no longer in office.

But Pelosi spoke of the trauma suffered by members and staff on Jan.6 when a crowd stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Biden’s electoral victory. More than the items and property that were stolen and destroyed, she said building staff were still bearing the brunt of the attack.

“I’m more concerned about the damage they’ve done to our staff, to our congressional colleagues, to the United States Capitol guard staff,” Pelosi said. “It’s damage. It’s damage that needs to be dealt with.”

Pelosi said the House has an obligation to uphold the integrity of Congress and that failure to fulfill that responsibility would “be detrimental to unity.”

“It’s our responsibility to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. And that’s what we’re going to do. Just because he’s gone now – thank goodness – you don’t tell a president: do this. you want in the last month of your administration, you’re going to get a free jail release card because people think we should be happy and forget that people died here on January 6th. “

Pelosi did not provide details on when the House would send the impeachment article to the Senate, except to indicate that it would be in the next few days. Those responsible for impeaching the house are preparing for a trial. “We are ready,” Pelosi said.

Now that the Senate is back and Democrats have secured a majority in the upper house, she has said the trial will come “soon.”

“It will be soon, I don’t think it will be long,” Pelosi said. “But we have to do it.”
