House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, considering the possibility of creating a GOP-only commission to investigate the Capitol riot.
Pelosi on Wednesday rejected two of McCarthy’s recommendations for the Jan.6 select committee: Reps Jim Banks and Jim Jordan, both of whom voted against certification of the 2020 election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania, two states where the President Joe Biden won.
“Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, insisting on the truth and worrying about the statements made and actions taken by these members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the select committee,” said Pelosi said in a statement. . “The unprecedented nature of January 6 demands this unprecedented decision.”
In response, McCarthy said Pelosi’s rejection of his committee choices “represents a flagrant abuse of power and would irreparably harm this institution,” he said in a statement.
“Unless President Pelosi changes course and sits on the five Republican candidates, Republicans will not participate in their mock process and instead continue our own investigation of the facts,” McCarthy added.
When asked “PBS NewsHour” correspondent Lisa Desjardins Commenting on McCarthy’s remarks, Pelosi said: “Maybe you are mistaking me for someone who would care.”
On Monday, McCarthy named five Republicans to serve on the January 6 House select committee to investigate the Capitol uprising – Banks as a leading member, and Representatives Jordan, Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy Nehls. Nehls also voted against certifying Biden’s victory in Arizona and Pennsylvania.
The legislation that established the Jan. 6 commission gave Pelosi the power to veto any selection of McCarthy.
Pelosi said in the statement that she had met McCarthy on Wednesday regarding “the objections raised” regarding his appointments and “the impact their appointments may have on the integrity of the investigation.”
