Already seen once again: For the second time in just over two years, President Nancy Pelosi led the House in a rush to impeach President Trump, citing an urgent need to rid America of a dangerous threat in the White House – then turned and dragged around delivering the charges to the Senate for trial.
The House on Wednesday passed an impeachment article accusing Trump of “inciting an insurgency” for his role in the Jan.6 assault by his supporters on Capitol Hill. But on Friday, Pelosi declined to say when she would send him to the Senate, forcing him to drop all other business until the trial was over. “You’ll be the first to know when we tell you we’re going there,” she haughtily told reporters.
Pelosi played the same games with Trump’s first impeachment, which passed the House on December 18, 2019, but did not come to the Senate until January 16, 2020.
“I’ll send them when I’m ready,” she whispered then, as even allies like Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) Said, “I think it’s time to move on.
She was keen to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to make the trial rules more pro-Democrats. It didn’t work – and only made his posture more pathetic. Now she is slow to help new President Biden.
Clearly, Pelosi does not see impeachment as a constitutional remedy to right serious wrongs, but as a way to play political games.
