The name was chosen from suggestions made by members of the Space Force, who have been known as “space professionals” since the service’s inception on December 20, 2019.
In choosing a name, General Jay Raymond, the chief of space operations, had previously shot down suggestions of something like “aviator,” saying it was important to choose a gender-neutral name for a service being created in 2020 .
Some on Twitter immediately associated the name with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.
“Lolol great energy Groot,” wrote one of them, referring to one of the characters.
Alex Ward, White House reporter for Vox, noted the similarity to a certain medium.
“BREAKING: the British newspaper changes its name to The Space Force”, he tweeted.
