IOWA CITY, Iowa – Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford left Saturday’s 23-20 loss to Iowa No.3 at Kinnick Stadium with an unspecified injury and did not return.
Clifford was injured in a passing game early in the second quarter. He went to the Penn State medical tent and then to the locker room for evaluation. The senior appeared on the Penn State sideline for the second half without his jersey and pads.
Clifford appeared to hold back his back or ribs as he made his way to the locker room.
Penn State coach James Franklin had no update on the nature of Clifford’s injury or the status of other injured players in the Iowa loss, including starting defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, reserve goalie Jonathan Sutherland and running back John Lovett. Franklin took issue with Iowa fans booing injured Penn State defensive players.
“They don’t launch a tempo attack,” Franklin said of Iowa. “It wasn’t part of our plan. I don’t think it’s the right thing for college football.”
Sophomore Ta’Quan Roberson replaced Clifford for quarterback and struggled, throwing for 36 yards with two interceptions.
Although he had two interceptions himself, Clifford helped Penn State take a 17-3 lead before coming out, passing for 146 yards and rushing for a team-top 33 yards and a touchdown. A third-year Cincinnati starter, Clifford entered the game with 1,336 passing yards and 11 touchdowns with three interceptions, with 67.3% of passes completed this season.
Clifford started his 26th career game on Saturday.
