Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar is stepping down from her post and as of Friday will no longer be part of Governor Tom Wolf’s administration.
The move comes after it was reported that the Boockvar Department had not announced a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution that would retroactively extend the time limit for victims of sexual assault to file civil lawsuits against their attackers. . A press release from Wolf’s office says that because of this error, the amendment process must start from scratch unless the state legislature passes a bill.

Boockvar, as the state’s top electoral official, made national headlines in 2020, both as an official defendant in pre-election lawsuits related to electoral rules and as a source of updates during the ballot counting process in Pennsylvania. Wolf made it clear that Boockvar’s impending departure was unrelated to the election, but linked to the failure of the Amendment.
“This change in the State Department has nothing to do with the administration of the 2020 elections, which was fair and precise,” Wolf said in a statement. “The delay caused by this human error will be heartbreaking for thousands of childhood sexual assault survivors, lawyers and lawmakers, and I join the State Department in apologizing. I share your anger and your frustration with this situation, and I support you in your fight for justice. “

Wolf said he would work to help the General Assembly pass a bill that would help victims in a way similar to what the amendment aimed to achieve.
The governor, who claimed not to be aware of the mistake until recently, admitted Boockvar to having taken responsibility for the mistake.
