Both soldiers were identified as Spc. Joseph Collette of Lancaster, Ohio, 29 and Sgt. 1st class Will Lindsay, 33, from Cortez, Colorado.
Collette was posted to the 242nd Artillery Battalion of the 71st Explosive Artillery Group in Fort Carson, Colorado, and Lindsay was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 10th Special Task Force (Airborne) at Fort Carson.
Two US defense officials told CNN on Friday that the two US servicemen had been killed during a joint military operation by the United States and Afghanistan. Officials added that the first indications are that they were killed during a fight with the Taliban. Afghan troops were also killed in the incident.
According to Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Loren Bymer, Lindsay enlisted in the Army in 2004 and received among other awards the Bronze Star Medal and the purple heart medal. His deployments include a handful of tours in Iraq, as well as tours in Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
Colonel Lawrence Ferguson, commander of the 10th special forces group, of which Lindsay was a member, said in a statement that his fellow soldiers were "deeply saddened" by his loss.
"Will was one of the best of our training, with more than a decade of service in the regiment at all levels of NCO leadership." We will now focus on supporting his family and honor him for his legacy and sacrifice, "Ferguson said.
This marks the third and fourth deaths of the US Army in Afghanistan in 2019 and comes as the Trump Administration has attempted to negotiate with the Taliban to help bring an end to the conflict.
