When the PS5 exclusivity Abandoned The Realtime Experience app finally got its fix last week, curiosity turned to disappointment when people realized the video was the same five-second teaser developer BLUE BOX Game Studios previously posted on Twitter three days earlier. Amid the reveal, creator Hasan Kahraman says he’s “really depressed right now,” in large part because of people calling BLUE BOX “crooks.”
NME spoke to Kahraman to “set the record straight”. Despite the initial call Abandoned A “first-person horror cinematic survival shooter” in his ad, Kahraman is now stepping away from his definition as horror, perhaps in an effort to keep him away from plots. “Abandoned is a shooter / survival game, ”he said. “It has horror elements in it, but it’s not really a horror game. Not even close, ”NME said. They say the central idea of the game Kahraman described to them is survival, and that it doesn’t have as many horror elements as a game like silent Hill or Alan wake.
The uniqueness of Abandoned apparently comes from how the gameplay is affected by various different things. Sprinting or taking damage can affect your goal; fear can also have an impact on what the character does. Kahraman says everything is “achieved through high-end motion capture.” He continued, “We do the motion capture ourselves and we create systems for the game based on animation data.” He goes on to say that it is exploration, damage, survival and “you just play the game … in a whole different way.”
However, Kahraman also tells NME that this mechanic is not yet ready to be seen by the public. “I think this mechanic is something really great. What we have so far is not ready for the public to see, but once that is over we will definitely show some footage. That’s why i’m so excited about Abandoned because it’s new.
This is part of the reason why the Abandoned The Realtime Experience app still doesn’t have a “real” trailer, but instead relies on five seconds of teaser footage for its launch. Kahraman admits the app has been a disaster. “People are really disappointed,” he admits.
Kahraman claims they had to cut footage from the opening teaser, which is why the teaser is the same video that was posted on Twitter.
Basically we had to cut out some footage from the opening teaser and I knew it wasn’t a good idea to use the same footage we had on Twitter and put it in there because it’s not about literally only four seconds of footage and that’s not the case. not give much. In the multiple delays leading up to the patch that posted the short teaser, investigations appeared to unearth what appeared to be several previous failed or abandoned BLUE BOX projects. The studio tweeted during this time insisting it was “100% real.” These tweets regarding issues BLUE BOX experienced with the app have since been deleted. Nonetheless, people have used BLUE BOX’s story and the issues with the app to question the studio’s legitimacy and Abandoned, wondering if the game will share the same fate as the developer’s past projects.
The nebulous story around Abandoned and BLUE BOX has been the source of contention and conspiracy since Kahraman first appeared on the PlayStation Blog to reveal Abandoned back in April. For months, a plot has persisted that BLUE BOX and Abandoned are replacements for Hideo Kojima working on a silent Hill game, in a ruse similar to what Kojima used to advertise Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Despite the repeated refusal of any connection, Kojima, Konami or silent Hill, the theories on BLUE BOX have persisted.
And among them all, on top of the recent issues with the PS5 app launching a whole new narrative, it’s really taking its toll on Kahraman. “I’m really depressed right now,” he told NME. “I can’t sleep, I can’t eat. The biggest thing that bothers me is just that people call us crooks. It’s the big thing that really, really hurts me. Because that’s not my intention at all, you know?
Kahraman is adjusting to the reaction of the fans, however. “We don’t want the same mistakes, we don’t want to announce a date and then make it really tight again for us,” he said. Still, he hints that the first cinematic trailer will arrive at the Abandoned Real-time experience application “really soon. ”The team was targeting gamescom first, but it doesn’t make any promises.
