When Disney acquired Fox, it was music to the ears of many Marvel fans. This meant that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have the opportunity to add many new classic Marvel characters never before seen in the MCU. Among those characters were the X-Men, one of the most popular superhero groups in comic book history. Storm is an incredibly popular member of the X-Men.
If Storm appears in the MCU, it wouldn’t be the first time she has appeared on screen. But fans are excited about the possibility, as many fans felt she could have been better represented before. So who is Storm, who has played her in the past, and why do Marvel fans think she has the potential to be a much better character in movies?
Who is Storm?
According to the X-Men wiki, Storm (real name Ororo Munroe) is a member of the X-Men with the power to control the weather. She has white hair and comes from a long line of African priestesses. Throughout her time in the comics, she has had many compelling stories. She went from being a member of the X-Men to being the leader of the group.
She also had a relationship with T’Challa (aka the Black Panther). Combine his great stories with his cool powers, and it looks like there would be no shortage of interesting movie plots. So why has she had such a lackluster representation in movies so far?
Who played Storm in the X-Men movies?

Storm was originally played by Halle Berry in the 2000s X Men. Berry also played the character in subsequent sequels. She’s a pervasive force at the X-Mansion, but doesn’t really understand any of the main storylines in any of those movies.
In X3: The last fight, she has a bigger role after the death of several of the X-Men and to open a kind of power vacuum.
Berry didn’t have the best experience on set at X-Men, telling Variety she didn’t get along very well with director Bryan Singer:
“I was sometimes very angry with him… I fought with him,” said a few curses out of sheer frustration. When I work I am serious about it. And when that is compromised, I go a bit nuts. But at the same time, I have a lot of compassion for the people who are struggling with whatever they are struggling with, and Bryan is struggling.
In the new X-Men movies, the younger version of the character is portrayed by Alexandra Shipp.
X-Men fans want Storm treated well
In a Reddit thread speculating on a new X-Men film series, a fan opened up about the potential treatment of Wolverine. The poster notes that no X-Men movie should focus solely on this character. In the comics, Wolverine was initially used as a supporting character, while in the movies, he became the leader due to his popularity. Cyclops was the team leader.
Another fan agreed with this sentiment and added that they believed Storm had been treated unfairly:
“I agree.
I need Storm to be just due and not as a wallpaper from the background diversity. “
If Marvel delves into the comics, they’ll find some great Storm-centric stories. The fact remains that Storm has been largely overlooked in the X-Men movies. Of course, they put a big star in the role of Berry. But there were probably better performers for the role.
While Berry is no slouch as an actor, Angela Bassett in the 90s would have been a perfect cast. Now Disney has a chance to do an even better job of casting the role – although Shipp did a good job when she took on the role.
An X-Men reboot gives Marvel a chance to do these classic characters justice. It will be difficult to find enough screen time for everyone due to the status of the X-Men as a whole. But there is no doubt that Storm should be the focus of this new iteration.
