While The Rise of Skywalker has many detractors, but one thing even the harshest critics can’t deny is the power to see multiple faces Star wars the franchise’s past reaches the galaxy far, far away.
While much attention was paid to the returns of Lando Calrissian and Emperor Palpatine, another beloved character returned late in the film. Wedge Antilles was part of the Star wars saga since its inception, but its Episode IX cameo was almost gone before it started.
Who is Wedge Antilles?
A fighter pilot alongside Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles is one of the best pilots in the galaxy. Beginning with the legendary Battle of Yavin and continuing over the next three films, West Indies was not a Jedi like Luke, nor a villain like Han. He was a rare glimpse of what it was like for mortal soldiers in the universe.
While Wedge’s overall role in the saga is small compared to everyone else, he has become an iconic piece for dozens of Star Wars-books, games and fan related arguments everywhere. Played by Scottish actor Denis Lawson, Wedge has helped the franchise’s main characters stay true to their task without demanding the same accolades as the main characters.
He was a glimpse of the people who were to live inside the universe without superpowers. He was a great pilot, a perfect winger, and Luke’s few non-Jedi friends outside of his central circle. All of this means that few characters had the front row seat that Wedge had as the Star wars the saga has taken its form.
However, bringing it back to the distant galaxy took convincing the filmmakers behind it. Episode IX.
Love-hate relationship
Many people in the Star wars actors owe their careers to franchising. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and the rest of the cast were immediately raised to the realm of Hollywood royalty after their appearance in the franchise. However, just because many loved being a part of the universe, others had a more complicated relationship.
Alec Guinness, who played the eldest Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original films, hated Star wars and constantly reminded fans who asked him for an autograph how much he hated being a part of it. When Lawson was not part of Episode VII, rumors circulated that he had views similar to Guinness’s.
His own nephew, Ewan McGregor, who went on to play young Kenobi in the prequels, fueled them when he spoke of his uncle’s insistence that he not play the part.
“He’s always been very dismissive because he worked for a few weeks, sitting in a cardboard spaceship,” McGregor said of his uncle on Fantha Tracks. “And yet he had this massive following. It kinda bothered him…. He was among those who said, “Don’t do it, don’t do it, don’t do it, and then the more I got there, the more I wanted to do it…. I’m so glad I did because it was so interesting to be a part of it.
However, Lawson hit back at these claims.

According to Lawson, he only appeared in Episode VII due to previous commitments. He cuts these rumors about his disdain for Star wars and the role many know it for as Internet nonsense, by Fantha Tracks.
“There are rumors that I was very dismissive of the new Star Wars movies and didn’t want to be involved. But this is completely absurd. I just couldn’t do the last one and the only thing I ever said was that I got bored with reporters asking me about Star Wars and it got translated into me in hating movies one way or another. I didn’t do it because I couldn’t. It was a problem I couldn’t do.
Fortunately, Lawson was able to return to Wedge’s ship. Though his role was small, he played a pivotal role in the ultimate victory that culminated in the Skywalker Nine Film Saga. Regardless of what fans thought of the films, seeing Wedge inside the ship showed that the events of the early films always affected those who weren’t strong in the force. For this, fans can be grateful.
