There is something that seems ridiculous in the media obsessed with a squiggle drawn on a map with a black Sharpie, especially with millions of people on the way to a destructive hurricane.
And yet, the Category 5 controversy must be added to the list of disputes that Donald Trump has brought to himself by doubling, tripling and quadrupling.
You can practically hear the media calls for a special prosecutor, the president denying knowing who drew a crude black bubble on a map dating back several days from the National Meteorological Service to include a burst of Alabama on the potential path of the storm, as the president had initially claimed.

On the one hand, the tidal wave of coverage – story after story, segment after segment – was out of proportion with the alleged offense. CNN even broadcast a message on the screen: "While people are dying, Trump forbids presenting a tampered card."
At the same time, the president once again expressed his categorical refusal to abandon previous controversies in which he felt unjustly criticized. In this case, it was the criticism of his Sunday statement that the hurricane could reach Alabama, which was contradicted by government forecasts. A minor error, easily corrected. But using the Aug. 29 map with the added black swirl, Trump opened the doors of criticism long after the press left.
He also tried to claim his confirmation by tweeting a map of the previous day: "As you can see, almost all models have predicted that Florida would also cross Georgia and Alabama. I accept the excuses of Fake News!
You will not be surprised to learn that no excuses have been presented to you. In fact, the Washington Post has indicated that falsifying official weather maps is … illegal.

Now, of course, there is a legitimate story here. Who used the now infamous Sharpie? A White House official told Fox that there was someone in the room when Trump met his emergency team, but he did not want to say who.
Some experts still use this episode to assert that Trump is a pathological liar who does not care about people who die of hurricanes. It's practically played like a scandal. And there are memes online with Sharpie brands for famous doctor photos, such as putting more people in Trump's inaugural crowd or making it grow.
But if the media is obsessed with this mistake, the president is too. On many occasions, it raises controversies that have disappeared from the news in order to defend its past position. Without the modified map, no one would talk about Alabama today.
Yesterday, towards the end of the day, Trump again tweeted NOAA's five-day and six-day forecast charts: "As I said, Alabama was originally Fake News denies it!
