Every danger! competitor must lose a day, even James Holzhauer. His end of the record at last night's show, after winning 32 games, exceeded more than 60 competitors and earned more than 2.4 million.
Holzhauer is a professional sports player. He said he was sticking to a winning strategy: he was choosing the most valuable clues first, then looking for the Daily Doubles to bet everything he had. But the strategy does not go so far: it has also managed to give the correct answers in 97% of the cases.
Chicago librarian Emma Boettcher ended her series. But Holzhauer, whose first broadcast took place in April, told KLAS-TV, a Las Vegas CBS affiliate, that he never expected to go that far.
"I thought maybe I could win 6, 7 episodes – certainly not 32 – and certainly not that level of money," he said. "My God, it was really amazing."
From the beginning, Holzhauer set the record for the biggest win in a single episode. He also left with the 16 best totals of a day of Jeopardy! history, winning an average of $ 77,000 per game. In 12 rounds in his series, he stayed in the game without missing a single question.
He also wagered the entire pot so often that he became known for his signature gesture. He was often so confident in his "Final Jeopardy" response that he was adding personal messages to his friends and family.
Holzhauer says that he had two keys to his success. One was physical: hold the horn with one hand and his wrist on the other to keep it in place. The other was mental: think like a player with big stakes.
"In poker tournaments, it is very beneficial to accumulate a big stack of chips very early: you can play games that no one else can," Holzhauer said. "
But last night, he entered "Final Jeopardy" in second place against a powerful competitor who also used his branding strategy of taking big risks for great rewards.
"My number one feeling was that if I had to go out, I wanted to face a high-level player who had beaten me in a straight match and not because I'd made a stupid mistake," he said. he said, adding that "it was a true honor to emerge victorious after playing against a great player that we could not stop."
"It was a wonderful experience that I would not trade for nothing," added Holzhauer.
Boettcher said the victory was "surreal". His victory also prevented Holzhauer from reaching the biggest Jeopardy! an important milestone: he was under $ 60,000 from former rookie Ken Jennings' record for the biggest gains in the regular season. Fifteen years ago Jennings had won more than $ 2.5 million in 74 games.
The two men tweeted Monday, while Jennings congratulated Holzhauer for his "hell".
