Person dies hours after receiving COVID-19 vaccine, Placer County officials say

An inquest was underway following the death of a person who died shortly after receiving a coronavirus vaccine in Placer County last week.

County health officials and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office released a joint statement saying the person died Thursday, hours after being vaccinated.

The vaccine had not been administered by the Placer County Public Health Department, officials said, without providing details of where the person received the vaccine.

Officials noted that the individual tested positive for COVID-19 in late December.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting the vaccine even if a person has had COVID-19 because of the serious health risks associated with the virus and because reinfection is possible, although rare. The CDC says COVID-19 patients who have been treated with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, should wait 90 days before being vaccinated.

It is not known what treatment the person would have received for the virus, and Placer County officials stressed, “Any report regarding the cause of death is premature, pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Officials said local, state and federal agencies are all investigating the case.
