“The victim and the suspect had a verbal disagreement, and the suspect shot the victim,” said Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder.
Police responded to the 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue area, Elder said, after determining that shots were fired using an automatic sound detection system called ShotSpotter.
When they arrived at the memorial site, “the officers encountered interference at the scene,” Elder said, but did not provide further details.
They were then told that the victim had already been taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The name of the victim was not disclosed.
The gunman has not been identified or apprehended, Elder said, and police are asking the public for help in locating the getaway vehicle, described as a light-colored Suburban with gunshot damage.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact Minnesota Crime Stoppers,” Elder said. “All advice is anonymous and anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction is eligible for a financial reward.”
An investigation is underway, he added.
