1 dead, 1 wounded during a shootout at Nevada Mormon Church; suspect in detention

A suspect was arrested on Sunday after a shootout at a Mormon church in Fallon, Nevada, killing one person and wounding him, authorities said.

The shooting took place in front of worshipers during a service at the Church of Jesus Christ Kaitlin Ritchie, a spokeswoman for the city of Fallon, told Fox 13

that Fallon police chief Kevin Gehman identified the suspect as John Kelley O. Connor, 48. Gehman said that "O" Connor fired several shots, then left the church and headed to his house, which is just across the street, According to the Nevada Appeal

Gehman said that O 'Connor returned to the police and sheriff's deputies KOLO-TV reports.

The investigators said that it was too early to understand the motive, but added that the attack seemed to be directed against an individual rather than towards the church.

Connor was a church member and had attended services before the shooting.

The second victim had a non-fatal leg injury and was hospitalized. The identity of the victims was not immediately revealed due to the identification of close relatives.

Sunday afternoon, Senator Dean Heller, R-Nev., Sent a tweet of condolences, acknowledging that he was in contact with the authorities. "Deeply saddened by the insane act of violence in Fallon today at the Church of the Saints."
