A man who was supposed to take care of the child, Francis Carlton Crowley, 32, was arrested for criminal endangerment, according to authorities. Additional fees were expected. It is unclear what Crowley's relationship is with the child or the boy's mother.
"For all of us at the sheriff's office, that's what we call a miracle," said the sheriff's office. "For the officers present at this event, it is particularly difficult to know what this little baby has endured in the last 24 hours."
The sheriff's office said the authorities had been called in the Lolo Hot area Springs in the Lolo National Forest. 8 pm Saturday night (11 pm ET) on a report of a man threatening people and acting strangely.
"In attempting to question Crowley, he appeared to be under the influence of drugs and had no sense for officers," the sheriff's office said – adding that Crowley "said that the baby was probably buried somewhere in the mountains. "

"After more than six hours of foot searches, a deputy heard the faint cry of a baby." the authorities said. "He followed the sound and found the baby alive, face down, buried under a pile of sticks and debris."
It was 2:30 am Sunday local time and 46 degrees outside when they found the baby, the sheriff's statement said. The boy wore only a wet and dirty thong.
An employee of the Missoula Court of Justice said that it was not clear if Crowley had a lawyer.
