A policeman fired at Weymouth; situation described as "critical"

A policeman from Weymouth was shot dead Sunday morning and the police described the situation as "very critical".

Witnesses testified that they heard gunshots between 7 am and 7:30 am A witness, who was sitting in the company of a dog, said he heard police officers shouting at someone to put a firearm before 10 to 15 shots were fired.

Another witness testified that he saw CPR administered to the officer. He was taken to South Shore Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the suspect was in detention.

There is a significant police presence on Burton Terrace. About a dozen shell casings could be seen on the floor and a house had bullet holes drilled through its window.

Police are also investigating a scene at South Shore Hospital where two cars were towed. It is believed that the whole situation began with someone who was driving erratically near the hospital.

Sources tell WCVB that one of the cars belongs to a suspect who stabs and the other belongs to an employee of the hospital.

State Police detectives assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office are involved in the investigation.
