Santo Domingo, 27 November (PL) Since January this year, 1,0101 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in the Dominican Republic. The Ministry of Health recommends to intensify preventive measures to prevent epidemics.

According to the latest bulletin of the National Directorate of Epidemiology, to date, a case has occurred, one death occurred, against four who died during the same period in 2017.

In addition, in the past few days, 38 probable cases of dengue fever have been reported – about half of which are children under 10 years of age – for a cumulative total of 176 probable and confirmed cases in the last four weeks.

The largest number of patients is in the provinces of Santo Domingo, Barahona and Pedernales.

Dengue is the mosquito-borne viral disease, which is most prevalent in the Dominican Republic and where suspicion in patients with febrile conditions is 1% higher.

However, the presence of other arboviruses such as Chikungunya and Zika represents new challenges for public health, as the three diseases can produce a similar clinical picture mainly during the acute phase, making difficult a clinical diagnosis and good management, have warned the authorities.
