At least one person was trying to climb the Statue of Liberty after a banner announcing "Abolish ICE" was deployed to its base Wednesday afternoon.
A woman was spotted climbing the statue, and had gone to the middle section of Lady Liberty, the public information officer of the US Sgt Park police. Dave Somma told NBC 4. The island was evacuated as a precaution
Earlier, seven people were arrested by the US Park police after unfurling a banner on which was written " Abolish ICE ". The banner was hosted by Rise Group and Resist NYC, who said on Facebook that the Statue of Liberty demanded that President Trump abolish the US Immigration and Customs Agency and "reunite families" , stop the deportations and stop the detention ".
The group, however, denied any connection with the climber. A tweet from the @riseandresistny account said: "The climber on the Statue of Liberty has no connection with our action #abolishice earlier today.
Images on social media show the big banner unfurled at the base of the statue. The seven will be charged with illegal protest, said Somma.

The news comes a week after a Wisconsin congressman introduced legislation to abolish US immigration and customs law enforcement agency in a change application that has become a crying campaign for some Democrats this season primary.
Rep Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) Introduced the bill as a result of a trip to the southern border of the United States, where he noted "cruel, inhuman and anti-American policies at the border which are now a direct result of [President] Donald Trump.
